UV absorbers are a class of chemical compounds that are commonly used in the pharmaceutical sunscreen market. These compounds are designed to absorb ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, which can cause skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer.

In pharmaceutical sunscreens, UV absorbers are typically used in combination with other ingredients, such as physical sunblocks like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, to provide broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB radiation. UV absorbers work by absorbing the UV radiation before it can penetrate the skin, converting the UV energy into less harmful forms of energy, such as heat.

Some commonly used UV absorbers in pharmaceutical sunscreens include iscotrizinol, avobenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, oxybenzone, and homosalate. These compounds have different absorption spectra and are often combined in specific ratios to achieve optimal sun protection.
