Antioxidants

In the plastic additives industry, antioxidants are crucial components that protect plastic materials from degradation caused by exposure to heat, light, and oxygen. Plastics are susceptible to oxidation, which leads to the breakdown of polymer chains and the formation of free radicals. This process can result in undesirable effects, including discoloration, loss of mechanical properties, and reduced product lifespan. Antioxidants serve as scavengers, neutralizing free radicals and inhibiting the oxidation process in plastics. There are two main types of antioxidants used:

Primary Antioxidants: These are directly incorporated into plastic formulations, providing initial protection against oxidation. They stabilize polymer chains by reacting with free radicals and preventing further propagation of the oxidation process.

Secondary Antioxidants: Working together with primary antioxidants, secondary antioxidants act as hydrogen donors, regenerating the primary antioxidants and extending their effectiveness. This, in turn, prolongs the overall protection against oxidation.

Antioxidants are especially vital in plastic applications exposed to outdoor environments, such as construction materials, automotive parts, and packaging. They help maintain the integrity and appearance of these plastic products, ensuring they can withstand environmental stresses and have a longer service life. The selection of appropriate antioxidants depends on various factors, including the type of polymer used, processing conditions, intended applications, and expected environmental exposure.
