Fluorescence Quenchers

Fluorescence quenchers are chemicals or substances used to suppress the fluorescence emitted by fluorescent compounds or dyes during the papermaking process. These quenchers are applied to paper formulations for specific purposes related to paper quality, appearance, and functionality. One common application of fluorescence quenchers in paper production is to enhance the whiteness and brightness of the paper. Some fluorescent compounds present in the raw materials used for papermaking can cause undesirable fluorescence, leading to a slight blue tint in the paper. To counteract this effect, fluorescence quenchers are added to the paper formulation. These quenchers work by absorbing the excess fluorescence and converting it into non-radiative energy, effectively reducing the blue tint and resulting in a brighter, more visually appealing white paper. Fluorescence quenchers can also be utilized to improve the opacity of the paper. Opacity refers to the paper’s ability to prevent show-through or see-through from the other side of the sheet. In some cases, fluorescent compounds in the pulp or filler materials can reduce the paper’s opacity due to light scattering. By incorporating fluorescence quenchers, paper manufacturers can mitigate this issue, resulting in paper with enhanced opacity and improved printability.

In the papermaking process, the choice and concentration of fluorescence quenchers must be carefully calibrated to achieve the desired effects without compromising other paper properties like strength, printability, and durability. Manufacturers conduct thorough testing and quality control to ensure the proper incorporation and distribution of the quenchers throughout the paper product.
